Petition to Implement the Leveson Report

We’ve set up a petition in association with Hacked Off and 38 Degrees, demanding that all three party leaders take real action to ensure an independent and plural media acting in the public interest. Sign the petition here! David Cameron famously said that he’d back the Leveson Report if it wasn’t “bonkers”. Now we know it isn’t – and yet today we saw Parliament split on whether to give Leveson’s proposals a backing in law.
Without the statutory backing that Lord Justice Leveson calls “essential,” there’ll be no way to guarantee the independence of the new regulator from the power of press barons and media owners. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Hacked Off and 38 Degreesto set up a petition calling on the government:

– To implement, as soon as possible, the recommendations of the Leveson Report in full;

– To ignore pressure from media barons and introduce legally-backed regulation, independent of politicians and the press;

– To place tighter limits on how much of our media an individual is allowed to own , and;

– To promote investigative journalism through effective public interest defences.

As our partners Hacked Off point out, we’ve been here before – in 1947, 1953, 1962, 1969, 1977, 1990 and 1993. But in 2012 we have the internet, making it much easier for individuals to sign and share petitions like this. Sign up here. Tell your friends!
