We’ve set up a petition in association with Hacked Off and 38 Degrees, demanding that all three party leaders take real action to ensure an independent and plural media acting in the public interest.
David Cameron famously said that he’d back the Leveson Report if it wasn’t “bonkers”. Now we know it isn’t – and yet today we saw Parliament split on whether to give Leveson’s proposals a backing in law.
– To implement, as soon as possible, the recommendations of the Leveson Report in full;
– To ignore pressure from media barons and introduce legally-backed regulation, independent of politicians and the press;
– To place tighter limits on how much of our media an individual is allowed to own , and;
– To promote investigative journalism through effective public interest defences.
