Ofcom dismiss complaints of BBC bias

January 16, 2020 By Media Reform Coalition

After more than 12 weeks deliberation, Ofcom have this week announced that they will not be investigating the BBC's controversial Panorama edition on antisemitism in the Labour Party. Broadcast five months ahead of last December's general election, the programme was the third Panorama edition in four years focused on, and wholly critical of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the … [Read more...]

Where’s the impartiality? #GenElec2019

December 3, 2019 By Media Reform Coalition

by Justin Schlosberg Time for a review of impartiality rules during elections? It is frequently said that a free media is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy and none more so than during an election period. But democracy is only well served if all political views are given equal prominence and fair interrogation.  We know we have a partisan press but during … [Read more...]

The BBC transmitted an edition of Panorama on 10 July called ‘Is Labour Anti-Semitic?’, presented by John Ware. It contained allegations that senior Labour figures close to Jeremy Corbyn had interfered with the internal investigations process and that the Party was insufficiently committed to tackling anti-semitism within its own ranks. BBC delivers government policy as it scraps free licence fee concession for most over-75s

June 10, 2019 By Media Reform Coalition

The BBC has today taken a decision that effectively positions it as an outpost of the Department for Work and Pensions. By agreeing to take away free licences for the vast majority of the over- 75s, the Corporation is implementing government cuts instead of standing up to them. While some 1.5 million households may be eligible for free licences if at least one resident … [Read more...]

MEDIA REFORM COALITION CONDEMNS THE ARREST OF JULIAN ASSANGE

April 13, 2019 By Media Reform Coalition

The arrest of Julian Assange and extradition charges brought against him set a grave precedent for press freedom. Both the US and UK governments have once again demonstrated contempt and cynicism for some of the basic principles of watchdog reporting in the public interest. Whatever the legal and political manoeuvrings at play in an attempt to disguise this brazen attack on … [Read more...]

JOIN THE MOVEMENT FOR MEDIA REFORM

Mainstream media aren’t working for us. Too many are owned by billionaire moguls and are uncomfortably close to government and commercial interests. They don’t represent a diverse range of people and views and they’re completely unaccountable to the audiences they’re supposed to serve. We believe that a flourishing, diverse and accountable media is essential for a healthy, functioning democracy.

For the price of just one cup of coffee per month, you can help support the growing movement for media democracy. Members get priority access to all our reports and events including the annual Media Democracy Festival, as well as being linked to national and local networks to organise on media reform issues.
